Not facing up to the truth can be VERY costly.
"The blind leading the blind" (Jul 01)
Matthew 15:1-13 (The Living Bible)
Some Pharisees and other Jewish leaders now arrived from Jerusalem to interview Jesus. "Why do your disciples disobey the ancient Jewish traditions?" they demanded. "For they ignore our ritual of ceremonial handwashing before they eat." He replied, "And why do your traditions violate the direct commandments of God? For instance, God's law is 'Honor your father and mother; anyone who reviles his parents must die.' But you say, 'Even if your parents are in need, you may give their support money to the church instead.' And so, by your man-made rule, you nullify the direct command of God to honor and care for your parents. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, 'These people say they honor me, but their hearts are far away. Their worship is worthless, for they teach their man-made laws instead of those from God.'" Then Jesus called to the crowds and said, "Listen to what I say and try to understand: You aren't made unholy by eating nonkosher food! It is what you say and think that makes you unclean." Then the disciples came and told him, "You offended the Pharisees by that remark." Jesus replied, "Every plant not planted by my Father shall be rooted up, so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and both will fall into a ditch."
As far as those Pharisees and Jewish leaders were concerned, most of them (and/or their sons and daughters) were slaughtered when the Roman Army sacked Jerusalem in 70 AD. The reason that happened was because those Judeans decided to initiate a military rebellion against the Roman Empire. In effect, they put their faith military armaments and "Judean national sovereignty" rather than God and therefore got "rooted up", as Jesus predicted above.
In today's America, we still have some glaring examples of "the blind leading the blind."
1. DIRECT POPULAR VOTE ELECTORAL SYSTEMS: Around 1970 or so, the Carter Administration advised (or more accurately ill-advised) the government of Columbia to incorporate a "direct popular vote" electoral system into their new constitution. I wrote to them and to numerous news agencies at the time pointing out that using a direct popular vote electoral system to elect a head of state was a really dumb idea, and that like many other countries that had tried using a direct popular vote electoral system for such a purpose, the poor Columbians would suffer a continual state of violent political turmoil as a result of their use of such an electoral system (Ref. my 12 Nov 96 article, "THE GOLDEN GOOSE OF AMERICAN POLITICS", on this web site). My points were ignored by all of them, and guess what has happened... Since 1970, the poor Columbians have indeed suffered a continual state of violent political turmoil as a result of their use of such an electoral system! That electoral system has created such a weak government that many parts of Columbia are for most practical purposes being run by drug cartels, and now our government is in the process of spending BILLIONS of dollars in an inevitably doomed attempt to "stabilize" the chaos created by their direct popular vote electoral system. What's even worse is that every four years, most of our nation's news agencies have advocated replacing our unusually stable Electoral College System with a direct popular vote system (like the one Columbia is using)! THAT's a classic contemporary example of "the blind leading the blind." The "ditch" in this case has not only been the thousands or tens of thousands of Columbians killed in the political turmoil created by their electoral system, it has also been in the form of large quantities of illegal Columbian drugs smuggled into America because the weak Columbian government can't control its own country, and in the BILLIIONS of tax dollars that our government is spending in a vain attempt to stem that flow.
2. The "WAR ON DRUGS": Since our government began its so-called "War on Drugs", numerous sources have reported that illegal drugs have become cheaper and more widely available (to anyone willing to pay for them) than ever before in America. The so-called "War on Drugs" has put millions of people in jail for so-called "drug offences" at an average cost of about $100,000.00 per year per inmate and created a booming prison-building industry, and yet the program has done no more to stem the flow of illegal drugs than efforts by the "Feds" to stem the flow of liquor during the Prohibition Era. Why is it that most other countries don't have as serious a "drug problem" as we have? Could it be that our own laws are contributing significantly to the problem? We already know that more Godly approaches (drug treatment and drug education programs) have proven to be a more effective way to reduce drug usage, but that's not where most of our "War on Drugs" tax dollars are being spent. This is indeed another example of "the blind leading the blind", and the "ditch" in this case is our costly (mushrooming) prison system, the BILLIONS of tax dollars being spent financing that "War on Drugs", and our apparent inability to significantly solve the problem. Such are the ways of Satan!
3. Congressman Ron Paul, one of America's leading apostles of the worship of "national sovereignty" (i.e. worship of the BLOODIEST idol ever created by man), is pushing a bill (H.R. 1146) which "1. Withdraws the United States from the United Nations, 2. Kicks the U. N. headquarters out the New York and off U.S. soil, 3. Stops the endless flow of your tax dollars to the U.N., and 4 Prevents American soldiers from serving in U.N. 'peacekeeping' missions." He cites threats from Red China, Russia, and "Rogue nations like Iran and Iraq" and says, "Make no mistake, it's a dangerous world -- and it's getting more dangerous." And he thinks that his "fortress America" (isolationist) proposals will help "solve" such problems? Granted, the U.N. falls far short of being able to "solve" such problems as well, but it does provide a relatively cheap alternative (relatively cheap compared to our present Defense budget) for solving a variety of problems that could otherwise lead to a nuclear war, and with a paid staff about the size of the city government of Hartford, Connecticut, it has also been saving the lives of tens of millions of men, women, and children each year! History has repeatedly shown that the only lasting solution to problems of anarchy is government, not MORE anarchy. In the past, MANY politicians have claimed that all we need to do to "have peace" is to maintain a strong military organization, and EVERY ONE of those politicians has REPEATEDLY been proven WRONG! How can anyone put their faith in theories that have proven to be WRONG 100 percent of the time! Well, according to Ron Paul, there are at least 15 other U.S. Congressmen who likewise believe in such repeatedly disproven theories. Clearly, this is another example of "the blind leading the blind." If we follow them, we may ALL lose our lives in their beloved "national sovereignty" ditch.
